Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), the primary aviation hub of northern Vietnam, stands as a vital gateway to Hanoi’s rich cultural heritage and the nation’s rapidly growing economy. Located 45 kilometers north of Hanoi’s city center, this bustling airport connects over 29 million passengers annually to domestic hotspots like Ho Chi Minh City and Danang, as well as international destinations across Asia, Europe, and Australia.
Renowned for its modern infrastructure, seamless operations, and warm Vietnamese hospitality, Noi Bai International Airport has earned its place among Skytrax’s “Top 100 Airports,” driving Vietnam’s tourism and trade ambitions.
Established in 1978, Noi Bai International Airport initially served as a modest military and civilian airfield. Its transformation accelerated in 2015 with the opening of Terminal 2, a sleek, glass-fronted facility designed to handle international traffic. Today, the airport’s two terminals – Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international routes – blend contemporary design with subtle nods to Vietnamese culture, such as lotus-inspired motifs and traditional artwork. Recent upgrades, including expanded runways and smart check-in systems, underscore its evolution into a world-class facility.
Plans for a third terminal and expanded runways aim to double capacity to 50 million passengers by 2030, accommodating Vietnam’s surging tourism and airfreight demands. These developments will solidify Noi Bai’s role as northern Vietnam’s aviation cornerstone, even as the new Long Thanh International Airport rises in the south.
